Robert Rodriguez has added some Academy Award-winning acting muscle to his upcoming manga adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita.  Christoph Waltz, the man who so deliciously played the apple-strudel-loving SS Officer Hans Landa in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, is near a deal to play cybersurgeon Dr. Dyson Ido in the live-action/CGI apocalyptic sci-fi film.  In the comic series, the same character is called Daisuke Ido, but this Americanization of the names is nothing surprising when mega-millions of corporate dollars are concerned.

Ido is the trusted mentor and medic of the title character, who's an amnesiac cyborg trying to hunt down the truth behind her mysterious past on the Red Planet.  Producers James Cameron and John Landau have been attempting to get Battle Angel Alita made for over 15 years, but got sidetracked with a little project called Avatar.  Waltz is capable of an astonishing range of acting, with his mocking turn as a flag-waving American convert in the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 commercials showcasing his signature sarcastic style and wit.

What do you think of Waltz being included in the Battle Angel cast, and are you excited to see Scrapyard depicted on the big screen?

Twentieth Century Fox's Alita: Battle Angel starts filming this fall and attacks theaters on July 20, 2018.
