There are few things that are more universally wished for than giant robots.
Sure, they'll probably wreak havoc and turn Skynet against us or throw us into the Matrix eventually, but it will be worth it in the meantime, because they're just so dang cool. Even with the first real-life giant robot battle apparently happening this summer, some people are still dreaming about the giant-robot future that could be, and two of those people are Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa, the creative minds behind this week's big debut from BOOM! Studios, Mech Cadet Yu.
Mech Cadet Yu stars a lowly janitor with big dreams named Stanford Yu who wants nothing more than to be one of the potential-mech-pilot cadets that he cleans up after, but with another wave of robots arriving from space to choose their partners soon, his dream seems hopeless. But this is no hopeless book. The first issue is a total blast and recalls all sorts of classic robot fiction while still standing on its own as a wonderfully imaginative and colorful new world. Pak and Miyazawa both have tons of experience with teen heroes — most notably with their creation of Amadeus Cho at Marvel — and their expertise really shines through here, making Stanford relatable, funny, and immediately worth rooting for.
I can't wait to see where this story goes, and I recommend you check it out as well, starting with this four-page preview of the first issue, which also includes looks at the covers by Miyazawa, Marcus To, Juan Doe, and recent multi-Eisner Award winner Sonny Liew. Check out BOOM!'s official solicitation for the issue — out this Wednesday, August 2 — followed by the preview in the gallery below, and be sure to let us know what kind of giant robot you want to pilot in the comments!
Once a year, giant robots from outer space come to Earth and bond with young cadets from the elite Sky Corps Academy to defend the world from the terrifying aliens known as the Sharg. It's a great honor to be chosen, but this year...well, the wrong kid was picked.
Greg Pak (Totally Awesome Hulk) and Takeshi Miyazawa (Ms. Marvel) team up for an action-packed adventure perfect for fans of Amadeus Cho and Pacific Rim!
