Horror icon Clive Barker has been terrifying us for decades, and now he’s cooking up a new take on his classic scarefest Hellraiser.
In a lengthy feature at Entertainment Weekly catching up on what Barker’s been up to in recent years, a little tidbit regarding a rebooted version of Pinhead’s certain brand of terror slipped in there toward the bottom. Turns out Barker has already wrapped a second draft of a script for a Hellraiser reboot, and it’s currently being reviewed by Dimension Films chief Bob Weinstein.
Barker describes the project as a “very loose” reboot and went so far as to reveal the unique angle he’s taking to try and reintroduce the world of Hellraiser for a new generation of people. You know, so they can also be terrified of Pinhead. According to Barker, he wants to double down on the mythology of the franchise and answer some questions to add a new dimension:
“I think the phrase is ‘reboot,’ although I’ve never really understood what that meant. I wanted to make sure we sounded some fresh notes. The movie actually begins on Devil’s Island. I wanted to fold into the Hellraiser narrative something about the guy—the Frenchman Lemarchand—who made the mysterious box, which raises Pinhead. I figured, ‘Well, what would have happened to him?’ He might well have been taken to Devil’s Island and I thought that would be a pretty cool place to start the movie. We’re waiting for Bob to come back to us and see when we’re going to actually make the movie.”
As anyone who has seen a Hellraiser movie in the last few years is likely well aware, the franchise has fallen on hard times as of late. Barker is the guy who made it a bankable brand, and we’re psyched to see he wants to come back and return the series to its former glory.
Do you think he can pull it off? Is he going in the right direction?
