The first trailer for Marvel and Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger series has arrived, and it looks unlike pretty much anything the studio has tried up to this point. Which could be a good thing.

The series is set to air on Freeform, so it hits the young and angsty buttons you’d expect from the home of Pretty Little Liars. But stars Aubrey Joseph (Tyrone Johnson/Cloak) and Olivia Holt (Tandy Bowen/Dagger) look to bring some real heart and humanity to the story. Along with the classic superhero tropes, this one also looks to deal with what it’s like when two people from different worlds collide (with superpowers, of course). If nothing else, the trailer certainly sets a tone all its own.

Here’s an excerpt from the official synopsis:

Cloak & Dagger is the story of Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) – two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers which are mysteriously linked to one another. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.

Freeform has ordered 10 one-hour episodes, and the series is set to premiere in early 2018.
