The market for superhero shows might seem saturated, what with the disparate DCEU and the Marvel Netflix shows, but there's definitely room for more. That’s the takeaway when yet another Marvel show just launched, this time on Freeform. Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, about the mysteriously superpowered and super-linked Tandy (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph), nailed its debut last week -- and the numbers are in.
According to Deadline, the Gina Prince-Bythewood-directed pilot episode premiered with a huge 1.64 million total viewers, making it Freeform’s “best series launch in two years” and its most-watched drama episode since the finale of Pretty Little Liars’ seven-season run.
Tandy can shoot light daggers while Tyrone can control darkness. Separately, they’re powerful, but together, they have a chemistry that complicates the plot and offers something new and bold to younger superhero fans.
That can be seen by looking at the most socially engaged scripted series last Thursday, which Cloak & Dagger swept up with 112,000 engagements across Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Tumblr. Here’re some examples:
And the show’s only seeing better and better numbers as the premiere has sat for a few days. This is great news for Marvel, which, now with X-men show Runaways on Hulu and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, is diversifying its TV-verse away from the Netflix-centric stories of Hell’s Kitchen. Cloak & Dagger is just one more notch in the company’s belt.
Marvel's Cloak & Dagger airs Thursday nights on Freeform at 8 p.m. ET.
