Young Miguel is an aspiring guitarist with a problem: His family claims music is a curse. Soon he has another problem: He’s been swept up into the Land of the Dead. And if he doesn’t return soon, he’ll be trapped there forever.
We learn all of this and more in the trailer for Coco, the latest surefire smash hit from Pixar. The trailer, below, shows us all of the charm of a Pixar film combined with a surreal yet warm landscape of Mexican lore. Plus, we get to know the characters, both human and skeletal, a little more. Dare I say it? They're fleshed out.
Pixar’s official synopsis is more detailed:
ON COURSE TO CURSED – When aspiring musician Miguel (voice of Anthony Gonzalez) ends up in the Land of the Dead in Disney•Pixar’s “Coco,” his family takes him to the Department of Family Reunions where a busy clerk (voice of Gabriel Iglesias) informs him that he’s cursed. To return to the Land of the Living, Miguel will need a magical marigold petal and the blessing of a family member—but, according to the clerk, the family member can include any condition she likes—even forbidding music forever.
Coco is produced by Darla K. Anderson and directed by Lee Unkrich, both from the fabulous Toy Story 3, a movie that moved me to tears. Unkrich is joined by co-director Adrian Molina, formerly a Monsters University story artist.
With this pedigree, I anticipate great things…and even though it’s off-limits, great music. Even though music is forbidden to him, I suspect Miguel will get a few licks in.
Coco will be released on November 22, 2017.
