Producer Gale Anne Hurd, no stranger to comic book adaptations, having brought two iterations of both the Hulk and the Punisher to the screen, has teamed up with Platinum Studios to bring Top Cow's comic book The Magdalena to the screen, Variety reports.

The Magdalena, published by Top Cow comics, concerns a descendant of Jesus and Mary Magdalene who is the foot soldier of a secret order of cardinals fighting evil agencies such as vampires. She has the ability to see into people's hearts and give them the chance to redeem themselves, and she wields the Spear of Destiny that pierced Jesus' side as a specially empowered weapon against the forces of darkness.

Versus, Midnight Meat Train and Godzilla: Final Wars director Ryuhei Kitamura has been signed to direct. The script is by The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations writer Holly Brix, who is also scripting the thriller The Lost Girls for MTV Films. Jenna Dewan, of Step Up and supernatural thriller Tamara is signed for the lead.

Though The Magdalena has appeared in a number of Top Cow comic books such as Witchblade and The Darkness and has had two of her own limited series, the character has yet to appear in her own ongoing series.
