As Crazy Horse once said, "Wednesday is a good day to die." We may be paraphrasing slightly.
A little over a week ago, we told you about the rumor that Bruce Wayne's son and current Robin Demian Wayne was not long for this world. Today we bring you confirmation.
This coming Wednesday, in Batman Incorporated #8, Demian will bite the big one. Accoring to writer Grant Morrison, "He saves the world. He does his job as Robin. He dies an absolute hero." The 10-year-old boy wonder will face off against a powerful assassin who, in true comic-book tradition, is his brother cloned from genetic material. What a way to go.
Demian was a great foil for Dick Grayson during his time as Batman and a cantankerous and difficult son to Bruce. As the son of Talia al Ghul, he was destined to be a little bit evil, and he spent much of his life on the page being at odds with the way his mother raised him and the code by which his father lived. In many ways, Demian was the best Robin and, at the very least, was second only to Dick.
Are we surprised at his passing? Not really. From the moment Scott Snyder's Death of the Family series began, we knew someone was going to die, and Demian was always at the top of our lists. It's called Death of the Family for a reason. Demian is Bruce's only actual blood relative in the Bat family and, much as when Jason Todd died at the end of Death in the Family in 1988, the fallout will likely cause Bruce to pull away from everyone who cares about him.
In some ways it's a rehash of an old story, but in others it represents something Bruce has not truly faced since he was a child -- the death of his own flesh and blood.
