Yesterday it was just a report from the Hollywood trades, but now it's a done deal. Paul Rudd is Ant-Man.

Yes, whether you like it or not, Marvel has reported that Rudd is indeed the choice to play the most diminutive of Marvel heroes after years of speculation over who would take the lead in director Edgar Wright's flick. According to Marvel, Wright "long ago" picked Rudd as his first choice for the role, and now that he's got his wish, all we can do is wait to see this Ant-Man vision unveiled. For Marvel's part, they're excited.

“When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star," said Marvel's Kevin Feige. "We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn’t be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life.”

Rudd's cinematic background is thoroughly comedic, much like that of Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt, and together they seem to be ushering in a new era of Marvel filmmaking. In keeping with the comedic spirit of the casting, Wright decided to acknowledge the announcement with a thoroughly bizarre YouTube clip of Rudd.

At this point, we don't even know which Ant-Man (Henry Pym or Scott Lang?) Rudd is playing, let alone what his story will be. But whatever direction the flick might take, we now know for sure that Wright definitely went for the comedic choice for this film, and whether you're happy about it or not, it means that Ant-Man has a definite tonal purpose at this point.

What do you think? Is Rudd good casting? We'll find out for sure when Ant-Man hits theaters on July 31, 2015.
