After months of rumors, Marvel has finally officially cast the last member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
We've been hearing since August that Riddick star Vin Diesel was set to voice the tree-like warrior Groot in director James Gunn's cosmic outing into the Marvel Universe, but though Diesel seemed more than willing to talk about the role, Marvel kept largely quiet about who was really landing the part. Over the weekend, though, the company finally made it official, announcing that Diesel would join Chris Pratt's Star-Lord, Bradley Cooper's Rocket Raccoon, Zoe Saldana's Gamora and Dave Bautista's Drax in the 2014 Marvel Studios film, which also stars Michael Rooker, Glenn Close and Karen Gillan.
Marvel's press release didn't include much in the way of further details, but Gunn did post his own confirmation on his Facebook page, both praising Diesel and hinting that the character's signature line would indeed be a big part of the role.
"Yep it is completely official," Gunn wrote. "AND he's amazing. I never knew someone could say I AM GROOT so many different ways and with such feeling (and that sounds like I'm kidding but I'm not!)"
So the Guardians of the Galaxy team is officially complete, and Diesel finally has that Marvel role he's been after for so long. What do you think? Did Marvel make the right call?
Guardian of the Galaxy hits theaters Aug. 1, 2014.
