Confirmed! The truth about that mysterious blue alien on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

We’ve gotten some pretty massive hints this season, but the cat is finally out of the bag in regard to the mysterious blue alien that has become a central mystery in ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Obviously, spoilers ahead for the current season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.!

As most fans had intuited by this point, the blue alien that was being experimented on by S.H.I.E.L.D. to create the serum that brought Coulson and Skye back to life is a Kree. Last night’s episode dropped some hints by talking about the “blue angels from the heavens” who brought the mysterious alien artifact the Obelisk to our planet years ago.

Producer Jeffrey Bell confirmed the Kree connection to TV Guide, but noted the audience will know a whole lot more than Coulson’s team for the immediate future. As Marvel fans are fully aware, the key baddie in Guardians of the Galaxy — Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser — was a Kree, and we know there’s a whole planet of those blue guys kicking around out there in the galaxy. All the folks back on Earth? Yeah, they’re still in the dark.

Another mystery took a major step forward last night when the S.H.I.E.L.D. team seemed to find the lost city connected to the Obelisk — and it looks like it's right here on Earth. We’re delving into speculative territory here, but many fans seem to think Marvel is laying groundwork for the upcoming Inhumans film by making this mysterious city the Inhumans’ home of Attilan. If they’re going to anchor a spinoff in 2018, it’d make sense to get ‘em rolling in the Marvel Cinematic Universe now.

In Marvel comic lore, the Inhumans are the descendants of humans experimented on by the Kree, who were also injected with celestial DNA. That’d explain a whole lot of the 0-8-4 questions, and also (potentially) explain some of Skye’s (Chloe Bennet) bizarro family tree. Not to mention why there was a Kree body here on Earth. Bell wouldn’t go so far as to confirm all that, but he did talk about where the Kree arc is going next:

“Our people don't know anything about the Kree or that there's a planet full of them. What they do know is that the strange carvings created by Coulson after he was injected with the Kree serum are actually the map of a city, and they need to find that city before Hydra does. But where is it? Here or on another planet?”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesday nights on ABC, and despite largely mediocre ratings, is actually quite watchable this season. What do you think of the Kree arc? Do you think S.H.I.E.L.D. will survive to a third year?
