Fans have been driving George R.R. Martin crazy the past few years, pushing him to finish the next A Song of Ice and Fire novel — but what if he already did?
There’s a new theory making the rounds that Martin may have recently finished his latest novel, Winds of Winter, and though the evidence is admittedly a bit thin, it does make a certain type of sense. Vanity Fair put the theory forward based on the fact that Martin has recently ended his self-imposed exile from other creative projects, which could mean he knocked something big off his plate. Martin is consulting on HBO’s proposed Game of Thrones spinoff projects, as well as producing HBO’s adaptation of Nnedi Okorafor’s Who Fears Death. That's a lot of stuff for a guy finishing one of the most anticipated novels of the decade, right?
The author has also been dropping some positive (though admittedly vague) hints on his personal blog, noting he felt accomplished and that he’s been working extremely hard recently. It makes sense. One other tidbit: HBO is keeping quiet on who’s hosting the Game of Thrones panel at San Diego Comic-Con, which could mean they’re planning to surprise fans with Martin (bringing a big announcement with him, perhaps?).
Again, these are all just grasped straws in a theory, but it could bode well for the book that was supposed to be finished a few years ago at this point.
What do you think? Is Martin getting ready to surprise us all?
