An old nemesis might come back to torment Hugh Jackman in his final screen outing as Logan.
Liev Schreiber was asked by MTV News about encoring as Sabretooth -- whom he played in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine -- and hinted that it could happen. Speaking on the red carpet at the Academy Awards this past Sunday, Schreiber mentioned that there have been discussions about bringing Sabretooth back for Wolverine 3:
"We’ve talked about it. I don’t know. I mean, he’s mentioned it to me. Old Man Logan story, that’s appealing. That’s something I can do. 'Old' being the operative word. Old Man Sabretooth."
Now by "we" and "he," we can probably assume that Schreiber means some combination of Jackman and director James Mangold, who's also returning for this film after the success of The Wolverine in 2013. It would actually be pretty neat if Sabretooth, aka Victor Creed, did come back for a rematch, since Schreiber's performance was one of the few bright spots in the otherwise execrable X-Men Origins: Wolverine (which also marked the screen debut -- albeit in poor form -- of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool).
Most of the rest of the cast remains a mystery for now, although Patrick Stewart is expected to make an appearance as Professor Xavier. And as previously reported, the movie will indeed be based on or inspired by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's Old Man Logan storyline, which finds Logan coming out of retirement to help an old friend in a dystopian future dominated by supervillains.
Since Wolverine 3 does indeed seem like it's going to be Jackman's swan song in the role, it would probably be nice to have some old friends and enemies show up to see him off. Would you like to see Liev Schreiber don his claws again for one more go-round as Sabretooth?
Wolverine 3 is set for release on March 3, 2017.
