Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers will be reporting back on the scene for Scream 5

Officer Dewey Riley won't Scream alone. The longtime character played by David Arquette in the Scream franchise will be joined by yet another returning fan favorite: Courteney Cox's survivor and final girl extraordinaire, Gale WeathersScream 5 was also reported to be in talks with franchise star Neve Campbell back in May. Now Cox's addition to the cast makes a compelling case that the series latest entry will be looking to continue on the franchise rather than do a total reboot.

According to a release, the film, from Spyglass and Paramount Pictures — directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not) and written by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not) — is still assembling its cast, with more updates to come.

“We can’t imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney," said Bettinelli-Olpin, Gillett, and Busick's filmmaking collective Radio Silence. "We’re absolute mega fans of her work and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the Scream saga!”

This entry will be the first film since 2011's Scream 4 and the first new addition to the beloved tongue-in-cheek horror franchise since the MTV/VH1 Scream series' third season ended last July. Scream 5 also boasts longtime franchise writer/producer Kevin Williamson as an executive producer.

Scream 5 does not yet have a release date, though it hopes to film in Wilmington, North Carolina, later this year.
