Thor is getting a new leading lady for his third standalone movie.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Tessa Thompson, who gave a terrific performance in last year's Creed as the title character's love interest, has joined the cast of Thor: Ragnarok in a role that is not named but said to be both "key" and a potential new romantic partner for the Asgardian Avenger played by Chris Hemsworth.
Where does this leave Thor's perennial love, Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman in the previous two movies? Unfortunately, it appears that both Jane and the actress will spend their time elsewhere in the Nine Realms going forward -- not necessarily a bad thing, since the chemistry between Hemsworth and Portman never really clicked in either Thor or Thor: The Dark World. Jane's mentor, Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard), is not returning for this outing, either, and it's a good bet that their intern/comic relief Darcy (Kat Dennings) will end up MIA as well, since most of this one is said to take place in Asgard and other realms.
So, which comic-book character -- if any -- could Thompson be bringing to the screen? With Cate Blanchett also reportedly joining the cast as the Enchantress, it's possible that Thompson could be playing Valkyrie, chosen by Odin to lead an elite group of Asgardian female warriors and a one-time love interest of Thor's in the comics.
Thompson, by the way, is also one of the stars of Alex Garland's Annihilation, where she'll join -- oddly enough -- Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Gina Rodriguez as one of four women who explore a dangerous coastal area where the laws of nature have been distorted. That movie starts shooting in a few weeks, while Thor: Ragnarok will roll cameras in June.
Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) is directing Thor: Ragnarok from a script on which the final credits are yet to be determined, since rewrites have been underway recently. In addition to Hemsworth, Thompson and Blanchett, the movie will star Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk. Thor: Ragnarok opens on Nov. 3, 2017. Who do you think Thompson could be playing?
