Creep: The Halloween live-event for a more sophisticated palate

Halloween live events are becoming all the rage these days, particularly around Los Angeles, where folks who like to get their freak on can walk through jump scare after jump scare at the likes of Knott’s Scary Farm, Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights, Warner Bros.’ Horror Made Here, and the like. But if you’re looking for a more cerebral scare, Creep may be just the Halloween attraction you’ve been fearing. 

Now in its fourth year, Creep, put on by the artists of Just Fix It Productions in downtown L.A., sort of sounds like L.A.’s hipster alternative to Halloween live events. Or maybe that’s just because this year’s show, "Awake" — where guests will "explore the deep and strange abyss of nightmares," according to the event site — takes place across from an oyster house, where you can use your ticket receipt for discounts.

Described on JFI’s website as a “high-end haunt experience” (tickets are $89) that intertwines “nuanced and in-depth storytelling with direct audience interaction,” the attraction won't just usher guests in and out of a maze full of Jasons and Freddys. They’ll actually watch a scary story unfold before their very eyes, and get to participate in that unfolding — sometimes in one-one-one scenarios. Indeed, the site warns: “YOU WILL BE TOUCHED”!

In groups of 25, guests will spend some 75 minutes fearfully making their way from narratively tied vignette to vignette around the 60,000-square-foot space. And odds are good that a fair chunk of that time will likely be spent wondering what kind of madness they signed up for.

“Creep was created four years ago to put a modern twist on the haunted house experience, but what it’s evolved into is a horror experience unlike anything else,” said JFI Productions founder Justin Fix in a press release. “We seek those moments of suspense, fear, and surprise — when guests question what they’ve gotten themselves into.”

Previous sold-out runs have all had their own themes: 2015’s season went behind the mask to dissect what it means to be a real-life creep; 2016’s show was called “Entry” and revolved around a cult dedicated to an artist who disappeared under mysterious circumstances; and last year’s effort was based on Amazon’s freaky folklore show, Lore.

As you can see in the trailer above, this year’s event, which runs on select dates from Oct. 5 through Nov. 4, promises to be very much its own thing, but with the same requisite scares, of course.
