Cruella: Emma Stone is a fashion saboteur in first stylish trailer for Disney origin film

By Josh Weiss
Cruella Emma Stone

Learn about the woman behind the spotted fur obsession in the first trailer for Disney's devilish new origin film: Cruella

Emma Stone (Zombieland, La La Land) steps into the iconic role of Cruella de Vil (mismatched hair and all), portraying 101 Dalmatians' ruthless fashionista as a young designer in 1970s London. Stone is only the second actress to portray de Vil in the live-action space. Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy) played a flesh-and-blood version of the character in the 1996 remake of 101 Dalmatians as well as its 2000 sequel. Close actually serves as an executive producer on this project along with Stone,

Set against the backdrop of the punk rock revolution, the story follows a young grifter named Estella, who will one day become the wicked and revenge-fueled Cruella. Even in the early days, though, Dalmatians still didn't enjoy her presence. Hoping to make a name for herself with her unique designs, Estella befriends a pair of young thieves who share her penchant for mischief. The young woman's flair for avant-garde styles eventually catches the attention of chic fashion legend, Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), but their relationship sparks a fashionable feud and sets Estella down a dark path.

Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya), the origin film co-stars Mark Strong (Kingsman), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (The Good Place), Paul Walter Hauser (I, Tonya), and Joel Fry (Game of Thrones).

“It’s been a great experience to play around with her backstory and discover what makes her the woman she becomes in the story we’ve seen," Stone said during a Vogue interview in 2019. "We‘ve had so much fun with the costumes, hair, and makeup to create her entire persona."

"It’s such a massive production," Strong told Collider in 2020. "There are huge fashion and ballroom sequences in it, which are just so impressive. I got to be on set during those days and spend most of my time with the two Emmas — Emma Stone and Emma Thompson. It was just great being able to shoot the breeze with those guys during the downtime, and then play with them, telling this fantastical story that I think people are thoroughly going to enjoy, when the cameras were rolling."
