Sure, Supernatural: Bloodlines might’ve been a steaming, soapy mess — but you didn’t think The CW would give up that easily, did you?
After deciding to pass on the proposed Supernatural spinoff, which looked like a poor man’s Originals and would’ve focused on the five monster families that secretly run Chicago, network president Mark Pedowitz confirmed they are actively pursuing alternate ideas for another spinoff to be introduced next season.
Here’s an excerpt of what he told reporters at the recent upfront presentations:
“We believe that there's a real brand in Supernatural. We had six really good pilots this year. We felt that Supernatural [spinoff Bloodlines] just didn’t quite get there, though we do know that people would come to it based on what we saw that night. I’ve already spoken to the creator and the studio. They know that we want to develop once more next season, a Supernatural spinoff. What it is and what it isn't yet is still in the air.”
Though the backdoor pilot for Bloodlines turned in solid viewership numbers, more than 2 million (which is very solid for The CW), critical consensus was mixed. The pitch felt like it was too much of a stretch for the Supernatural universe, and we’re hoping the next attempt will stay a little closer to the wit and tone that make the show so great.
Now, the big question — what should be the basis for the next Supernatural spinoff?
