CW exec explains why that Battle Royale series may never happen

With The Hunger Games lighting up the box office and bookstores everywhere, The CW hopes to get in on the teen survival competition genre sooner rather than later. They're developing two concepts, but neither has made it to the pickup stage. So what's the latest on the controversial Battle Royale and the delayed pilot The Selection?

A potential series based on the controversial Japanese thriller Battle Royale, about students forced into a government battle to the death, is currently in the discussion phases—though CW president Mark Pedowitz told Collider they're trying to figure out if it could work.

The biggest holdup? The controversial premise, which focuses on students killing one another. Pedowitz said they don't plan on going in any direction that could make the show too dark, which likely means it would be more Hunger Games-style, and less Kick-Ass-kids-getting-beaten-up-style, if it actually happens:

"At this point in time, it's only in development, and we're not even actually in development. All that existed was a phone call. And we're not planning to do anything that we cannot get on the air. So, the answer to that question is, no, we're not going to go in that direction. We're going to wait to see what happens and how things develop."
As for The Selection, whose synopsis reads like the jacket on a Hunger Games novel, Pedowitz said they're retooling to see if it's something they'd like next season. It was passed over this year due to a stacked schedule and more time being needed to refine the concept:
"The producers did a really good job. We had an embarrassment of riches with what we ended up picking up. It just wasn't where we wanted it to be, tone-wise. The producers and writers have gone back and are re-scripting as we speak. We'll hopefully see something soon or make a determination about whether to go forward. I'm a big believer in the show. I really wanted a show that had a Game of Thrones/The Hunger Gamestone, and we hope it's The Selection. If it's not, then we will look at another arena, in terms of that. Battle Royale comes with a nice cult following, as we all know, and might have been one of the predecessors of a lot of these things that we see today."
Regardless of which series it is, what do you think? Would you like to see something Hunger Games-esque on a weekly basis?
