You know sci-fi, fantasy, and horror have reached the pinnacle of pop culture mainstream when the evil clown Pennywise from It has become a Twitter hit. And it’s all thanks to a ridiculous, off-kilter meme.

Twitterer @Pennywise_Dance has created several videos of Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Sound simple? Actually, it was a freakish moment on screen.

Alert: Spoiler ahead!

If you’ve seen It — the Stephen King novel turned record-breaking horror film — you’ll know that Beverly has been separated from her friends and is currently being tormented by It’s in-your-face and in-your-mind antics.

The meme has Pennywise dancing to different types of pop songs ("Shake It Off," "Mambo Number Five," "Beautiful People"). For the most part, it’s just plain ludicrous.

On the other hand, this can help those of us who were traumatized by Pennywise to think of It as something more absurd and less malign.

Also, it makes us realize that Pennywise speaks to our heroes’ deepest fears. Considering Beverly’s reaction to It, perhaps she had a previously unknown yet deep-seated fear of dancing?

Here are a few memes, so you can feel less horrified by It. Also, a shout-out to @Pennywise_Dance for using one of our favorite cheesy '70s songs, "Rah Rah Rasputin."
