In today’s casting news, we get some information on who will be in Rob Zombie’s new film, who’s joining the ever-growing cast of Boss Level, and who will take the lead of Amazon's superhero fighting team, The Boys.
First up, fan favorite and massively prolific actor Danny Trejo has joined the cast of Zombie’s upcoming film 3 From Hell, reprising his role of Rondo from Zombie’s 2005 horror hit, The Devil's Rejects.
Director Zombie made the announcement via his Instagram account. “Well kids, Rondo aka @officialdannytrejo is back and ready to get crazy in 3 From Hell,” he wrote alongside a photo of himself with Trejo.
3 From Hell, which began shooting last month, is a sequel to The Devil's Rejects, which in turn was a sequel to Zombie's directorial debut, 2003's House of 1,000 Corpses. The "3" most likely refers to the three members of the mass-murdering Firefly family — Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie, Rob's wife) and Otis (Bill Moseley) — from Corpses and Rejects. The “From Hell” may also be quite literal, since the Firefly family appeared to have died in a blaze of glory in The Devil’s Rejects.
We’ve got even more casting news about the upcoming “Groundhog Day-style action thriller” Boss Level, if you can believe it. Ken Jeong and Mathilde Ollivier have joined a cast that includes Mel Gibson, Frank Grillo, and Naomi Watts, Deadline is reporting. Jeong is known for his roles in such films as The Hangover and Knocked Up, while Ollivier is a relative newcomer to Hollywood.
The action thriller written and directed by Joe Carnahan is about Roy (Grillo), a retired special forces veteran stuck in a never-ending time loop that repeatedly leads to his death. To break the cycle, Roy must figure out who his killer is and stop them.
Jeong will play Chef Jake who runs the restaurant where Roy finds himself every morning as he repeatedly begins the day he dies. Ollivier, meanwhile, will play Gabrielle, a Parisian bartender at the Chronos Bar where Roy is a regular.
And finally, Eric Kripke, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen's Amazon adaptation of Garth Enis and Darick Robertson's 60-issue comic book series, The Boys, has found its Billy Butcher, the founding member and leader of the titular black ops team that keeps all the corrupt superheroes of the world in check. And according to Deadline, the actor playing Butcher is a genre superhero in his own right: Karl Urban, who you might recall from favorites such as Star Trek, Thor: Ragnarok, The Lord of the Rings, and Dredd.
The series is expected to debut on Amazon sometime in 2019. Urban joins Jack Quaid (Hughie), Laz Alonso (Mother's Milk), and Karen Fukuhara (Female) on the titular team. For more on Urban's part of Billy Butcher, have a look below at our "The Boys in Two Minutes" video below.
