Exactly a week ago, we got the good word and a teaser vid as proof that production had begun on Stranger Things Season 3. In the vid, we saw lots of cryptic shots of the backs of all the primary players' heads, including the rather large cranium of one Police Chief Hopper, aka David Harbour. Now we get our first look at the front, and after all his fine detective work in the first two seasons, he finally looks like a proper police officer.
That’s one fantastic ‘stache Chief Hopper, if we must say so ourselves…
With Stranger Things 3 set in the summer of 1985, it just makes sense for Hopper to be rocking the ‘stache. After all, Magnum P.I. was five seasons in at that point, which featured Tom Selleck and the most famous ‘stache of them all. Selleck’s perfect upper lip firmly sealed the mustache-wearing-cop trope, with help along the way from Burt Reynolds' Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas), Danny Glover’s Roger Murtaugh (Lethal Weapon), Sean Connery’s Jim Malone (The Untouchables), and Gary Oldman’s Jim Gordon (The Dark Knight), among many, many others. And lest we forget, the Super Troopers perfected the look.
Of course, Harbour's got a lot to live up to in the 'stache department, now that he's got a new co-star in Cary Elwes...
Still, Hopper sporting a proper ‘stache is really just him living up to his law-enforcement potential. Considering the fine detective skills he’s already shown in the first couple of seasons, that’s saying something. Granted, until we see the ‘stache in action, nothing is confirmed. We’ve seen ‘staches disappear in post in the past.. well, mostly disappear.
We’ll also have to wait and see if the handsome grizzly bear decanter that Harbour is highlighting in the post means anything. Because your guess is as good as ours there. Is that just a prop lying around? Are there bears in the Upside Down? Is he taking facial-hair inspiration from the bear more than Magnum?
Only time will tell, as Stranger Things 3 isn’t likely to air until the fall, at the earliest. In the meantime, let the detective work commence!
