In the words of the Man From Another Place, I've got good news.
David Lynch tweeted late on Friday (May 15) that he was back on board the Twin Peaks revival. The return of the cult TV series was first announced in October as a limited nine-episode series on Showtime, with Lynch directing the entire run and he and co-creator Mark Frost scripting them all as well. But then last month Lynch shockingly revealed that he was leaving the project, ostensibly over budgetary issues with the cable network, with Lynch saying, "I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done."
Whether Lynch really quit or was negotiating in public, it worked, because this is what he tweeted on Friday:
Frost confirmed the news on his own Twitter feed, and then Showtime chimed in ... with an even more surprising announcement from Showtime chief David Nevins:
"This damn fine cup of coffee from Mark and David tastes more delicious than ever. Totally worth the extra brewing time and the cup is even bigger than we expected. David will direct the whole thing which will total more than the originally announced nine hours. Preproduction starts now!!"
So, not only is Lynch back, but we'll be getting more than nine hours of Twin Peaks goodness, and Lynch will direct them all. This negotiating-in-public thing is really something, huh?
Still to be confirmed is which cast members will be coming home to the sleepy Washington town. We know Kyle MacLachlan was already signed to reprise his role as FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, and before Lynch's April retreat, it looked likely that Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer/Maddy Ferguson), Dana Ashbook (Bobby Briggs), Madchen Amick (Shelly Johnson) and possibly Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne) would also return. Amick even made a video in which cast members rallied around their leader after he backed off the show.
Twin Peaks is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2016, and now it looks certain this will become a reality. Are you thrilled that David Lynch is back where he rightfully belongs?
