Your favorite whiskey-swilling, world-hating private eye is almost back on Netflix. The second season of Marvel's Jessica Jones arrives in 2018 and despite her hardened exterior, Jessica (Krysten Ritter) is still reeling from that time she murdered Kilgrave aka The Purple Man (David Tennant) at the end of the first season after repeatedly trying to stop him and those mind-control powers of his. In an exclusive first look at the show's sophomore season, Entertainment Weekly shows us that Kilgrave may be gone, but he definitely isn't forgotten.
“He’s such a part of her construction and her dilemma,” showrunner Melissa Rosenberg told EW. “I think just having him come back and be that mirror again is really important... She was somewhat of a mess even before Kilgrave came into her life, so [Season 2] is about digging deeper into that chaos and peeling back those layers.”
In all likelihood, Tennant's Purple Man will be a figment of Jessica's imagination, tormenting her at low points during Season 2. And she's going to be feeling pretty crummy, according to Ritter. “Jessica is in a pretty dark headspace when we meet her at the top of season 2," she said.
Having Tennant back on set, though, was the opposite of traumatic. "Having David back on set was amazing. We had such a great run the first season, and it felt like a celebration, having him back," said Ritter.
Art seems to be imitating art because the Purple Man recently returned in the Jessica Jones comic by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos.
Season 2 will also explore the backstory of how Jessica got her powers. Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor) uncovered a bunch of files that could shed light on the mystery last season, but what they'll illuminate is anyone's guess. Jessica be going further down the hard-boiled rabbit hole and you can bet she'll be just as nasty and bitter as ever.
Carrie-Anne Moss and Eka Darville return as Jeri Hogarth and Malcolm.
