What's the best part of seeing two teams of superheroes kidnapped by a mysterious villain and dropped together for a comic book annual? Why, seeing them argue and fight with one another, of course! And that's precisely what happens in Titans Annual #1 by DC Comics.
Available March 29, the book -- written by Dan Abnett with art by Minkyu Jung and cover by Norm Rapmund and Brett Booth -- kicks off with Wally West and Tempest encountering Aquaman in some strange facility. Soon, they discover they've been trapped, along with Barry Allen, Batman, Nightwing, Wonder Woman and Donna Troy.
Notice a pattern here? Yup, it's the Titans and their Justice League mentors. And things get tense right away when Arthur tries to take lead and calls Wally a "protege" -- which is still better than Batman calling him Barry's "boy." Beyond the sidekick insults, no one trusts one another since they're not even certain anyone is who they say they are. And that's exactly what The Key wants; the manipulative psycho-chemical baddie, now possessing 19 senses, is behind the machinations.
But who is he teamed up with? Cut to Dan Abnett with some teases about this hero vs. hero issue.
Dan, set up the action in this issue, and why it's one to pick up?
Dan Abnett: It’s a particularly cool story with amazing art. This will be the first time in the Rebirth Titans that we’ve seen them ‘side by side’ with their mentor characters from the Justice League. Nightwing, Wally and Donna Troy are mysteriously kidnapped - and so are Batman, The Flash and Wonder Woman. As the other Titans and Leaguers struggle to find their missing friends, the six heroes have to work together to defeat a surprising foe. But it isn’t easy … not only are each classic character and his or her ‘protege’ from the Titans, no one trusts anyone. Are they all who they seem to be? Can they find a way to work as a team before they are annihilated?
What is your favorite panel/page/line in this issue?
Abnett: There’s a huge amount of fun to be had the whole way through in the back-chat between mentors and proteges. This is all about DC legacy characters. But the real stinger has to be … well, there’s a HUGE revelation in this annual, and the shockwaves will be felt for years!
Tease how this might set up the next issue.
Abnett: The Titans are going to be rocked by the revelation in this story, and the after-effects will be felt through the next issues of Titans. Not only that, but this annual and the issue that follows sets up a bunch of meta-story strands that are going to run through the next few stories and then play out BIG TIME.
So, did Dan whet your whistle and make you want to pick up the issue? Well, continue ahead for an exclusive super-sized preview of Titans Annual #1 below. Then, if you want to see the action escalate, and I think you do, pick up the comic when it drops this Wednesday.
Who do you think is behind the villainous scheme? And which hero will be the first to punch another?
