After showing up on the big screen in the rapidly approaching Justice League, Aquaman comics mainstay Mera is finally getting her first-ever solo comic miniseries, which will be coming out this February.
If audiences enjoy the big-screen incarnation of the character (played by Amber Heard), then this will tide them over until she appears in an greatly expanded role in the upcoming Aquaman feature, directed by James Wan and hitting the big screen on Dec. 21, 2018.
According to Newsarama, Mera: Queen of Atlantis will be a six-issue limited series, written by Aquaman writer Dan Abnett, with art by Lan Medina. A summary reads, "As the brutal Atlantean Civil War rages, Mera must keep the peace between the surface world and Atlantis as its newly anointed queen in exile. But when Aquaman’s brother Orm, a.k.a. Ocean Master, learns of his homeland’s fate, he’ll stop at nothing to return to Atlantis as its king and savior!"
This is great news for fans of Mera, especially since this will give the character an opportunity to become known as something other than just "Aquaman's girlfriend," a designation she has more than outgrown in recent years.
DC has been getting progressively better at focusing on its strong female characters, with Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, the Birds of Prey, and especially Batwoman all leading the charge. Here's hoping that their upward trajectory continues -- not just in the comics, but on the big screen as well.
The huge success of Wonder Woman proved that audiences very much want to see these characters, so maybe a Batwoman movie is not as far-fetched as it once seemed?
