If DC Universe’s new Stargirl show is Buffy meets Spider-Man: Homecoming, then Brec Bassinger is your new slayer/webslinger. Rounding out its stars — ha ha — for its brand new streaming service’s upcoming programming, Warner Bros. announced that Courtney Whitmore and her alter-ego will be played by the Nickelodeon mainstay Bassinger.
According to Deadline, Stargirl is one of writer/executive producer Geoff Johns’ pet projects, making it likely one of the shows that the new service will put much of its faith in to prove its worth to fans. Johns created Stargirl back in Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. #1 in 1999, where she joined the Justice Society of America and took up the cosmic staff of Jack Knight aka Starman.
“There is no other character in comic books more special to me than Stargirl, and after searching far and wide I can say there is no other actor on the planet that embodies her more than Brec Bassinger,” Johns said. “Brec’s warmth, strength, humor and positive energy are core to who Courtney Whitmore is. I’m so grateful she’s signed on for the role.”
Whitmore took over the mantle of the Star-Spangled Kid (her stepdad) in her debut, lending her effervescence to the crime-fighting cause as yet another costumed high-schooler with powers like Robin: a hyper-motivated, tough-as-nails teen. One that can also shoot shooting stars and manipulate energy...eventually. Versions of the character have appeared in Smallville and Legends of Tomorrow, but always briefly. Her standalone series will let fans get to know the heroine (and Bassinger) when it debuts.
Stargirl’s 13 episodes will premiere in 2019.
