It's time to put on your waders and sink waist deep into the quagmire. DC Universe's upcoming Swamp Thing series has cast Andy Bean as Alec Holland and Derek Mears as the boggy creature Holland transforms into. Bean will be playing an adult version of Stan Uris in It: Chapter Two, whilst Mears is known for his portrayal of Jason Voorhees in the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th.
These two casting choices were confirmed by the official DC Universe Twitter account, which wrote:
"Something lurks in the swamp. Announcing Andy Bean as Alec Holland and Derek Mears as Swamp Thing. Welcome to the #DCUNIVERSE. #DCUSWAMPTHING."
Created by Len Wein in the 1970s, Swamp Thing is a character that arose from the usual science experiment gone awry. In the comics, Alec Holland was a gifted Louisiana-based scientist who was doused with chemicals that merged his body with the organic swamp matter outside of his lab, turning him into the titular swamp-based abomination. On the show, his origin story will be slightly different, according to the series website:
"Passionate biologist Alec Holland is caught in the crosshairs of a small town nightmare when he discovers a bizarre local illness may be connected to his work in the swamp. Holland's discovery leads him into conflict with dark forces, from which he emerges as the elemental hero known as Swamp Thing."
In his new form, Holland (or rather the thing that was him) has superhuman strength, near invincibility, and, most importantly, control over all plant life. He's like Poison Ivy, only uglier to look at. Sadly, all of these newfound abilities begin to rob Holland of his humanity and former identity.
"When dark forces converge on the town of Marais, Swamp Thing must embrace what he has become in order to defend the town as well as the natural world at large," reads the site.
Several casting announcements have been made already, but these are obviously the biggest thus far. Bean and Mears will be joined by Virginia Madsen, Jeryl Prescott, Jennifer Beals, Crystal Reed, Maria Sten, and Abby Arcane.
While Swamp Thing was created by Wein, it was Alan Moore's run with the character in '80s that turned Alec Holland and his marshy counterpart into comic book legends. The show (executive produced by James Wan) will be heavily inspired by Moore's work therein. Underworld alum Len Wiseman is helming the pilot episode, which is expected to drop on DC Universe in 2019. Mark Verheiden (Ash vs Evil Dead) and Gary Dauberman (Are You Afraid of the Dark?) are also attached to the creative team behind the show.
