Deadpool 2 arrived in theaters with a final running time under two hours, and a lot of material that didn’t make the final cut. And that’s not even including the fake X-Force footage that was created to fool fans in the trailers! But there’s good news for anyone who wants to see more of Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth: An extended edition of Deadpool 2 is already on the way.
While speaking with Cinema Blend, Deadpool 2 director David Leitch revealed that he is collaborating with Ryan Reynolds and the screenwriting duo of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to make an extended edition of the film -- one that they can all agree on.
“There's an extended cut,” said Leitch. “And I think that they may want to spin that out as a special thing, but right now I'm sort of... we're taking our time, and it's going back to the 'director cut,' and then sort of collaborating with Ryan, Rhett, and Paul, and making sure we're all getting all the jokes we want -- to have it be fun and our sort of fun collaboration.”
**SPOILER ALERT: There are a few Deadpool 2 story spoilers below!**
Leitch also offered a fairly detailed account of the material that will be added to the new cut, including an extended suicide montage as Deadpool tries to end his life after Vanessa’s death. Deadpool’s scenes in the X-Men mansion will also get more time, as he attempts to “go straight.” Additionally, Leitch teased that Deadpool’s soap joke will get a bigger set up as Colossus falls for the prank.
It’s currently unclear if the Deadpool 2 extended cut will be available on the initial Blu-ray and DVD release, or if Fox will release a theatrical edition first before offering the extended version at a later date. Either way, we know which version we want to buy!
