It's been just a year since Hugh Jackman's Wolverine kicked the bucket in Logan, and Deadpool 2 already wants to open up a wound that was just starting to heal. A new poster for the sequel (out May 18) is not only chock-full of beautifully rendered characters like Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), Cable (Josh Brolin), Domino (Zazie Beetz), and Peter (Rob Delaney), it also bears the tag: "From the Studio That Killed Wolverine." Why must you make us cry like this, Deadpool 2? Acceptance over the immortal mutant's death had just begun to settle in and you go pull something like this. Shame on you.
This is par for the course when it comes to the marketing for the movie, which has been as crazy as marketing campaigns come. Compared to the mini-gummy hands from Trolli and an original song sung by Celine Dion, this poster is pretty tame. It also brings to mind the first full trailer released back in March, which incongruously boasted: "From The Studio That Brought You 27 Dresses and The Devil Wears Prada." While true, as always the Merc with the Mouth's doing his own thing.
Noticeably absent from the new poster is T.J. Miller's Weasel, who, based on the trailers, will help Wade Wilson recruit members to the mutant team known as X-Force during the applicant interview process. Reynolds has confirmed that Miller, who has been accused of sexual misconduct and was recently arrested for calling in a bomb threat at an airport, will not be a part of the X-Force spin-off movie.
As for the topic at hand, why is Deadpool lying on a swan boat? Why is Cable pulling an Ebony Maw and shushing us? Who is being so loud? Who is that mutant with the electrical rope? All questions will (hopefully) be answered when the film arrives in theaters May 18.
