It might be an animated series based on a Marvel Comics character, but we’re thinking this one is not for the kiddies.
The cable network FXX has placed a 10-episode straight-to-series order for a new, animated Deadpool series to air on the network in 2018. Community alum Donald Glover, who won a Golden Globe for his acclaimed series Atlanta, is running the project along with his brother Stephen Glover (who also writes for Atlanta). Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory are attached to executive-produce.
“How much more fun could this be? Deadpool, Donald and FX – the perfect fit for the Merc with the Mouth,” Loeb said in a statement. “We’re thrilled that our relationship with FX that started with ‘Legion’ continues with what is sure to be a groundbreaking show in adult animation.”
The series should be a solid fit for the FX series of networks, which already runs the acclaimed adult-themed comedy Archer. FXX is looking to move “aggressively” into adult animation, and Deadpool should certainly hit that sweet spot. No word on casting, but it’ll be interesting to see if big screen star Ryan Reynolds is up for lending his vocal talents to the project. Also, with this being animated, that should loosen the restrictions for other comic characters to potentially cross over. At least, one would think.
As for Glover, he is no stranger to the Marvel world, and was a fan-cast pick to play Miles Morales (if they ever made a live-action movie), and also voiced the character in some animated Marvel shows. Up next, he has a co-starring role in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
What do you think? Would you follow the Merc With a Mouth in animated form?
