It wasn't the first time that Hollywood had adapted the Man of Steel for the Silver Screen, but man did people go nuts for Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder when Superman premiered on this day in 1978.

Directed by Richard Donner, the film has Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, Marlon Brando as Superman's father, and Glenn Ford as Jonathan Kent. It's still got a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes!

Interestingly enough, today is also the birthday of a Supergirl. Helen Slater was born on this day in 1963 in Massapequa, Long Island.

Third, Sedagive:

Also premiering on this day in 1995 was Jean-Pierrre Jeunet's baffling and terrifying and absolutely wonderful The City of Lost Children.

You've probably seen Amelie (2001) more recently, but this movie really does a lot of amazing things really well and is worth checking out again.

Tomorrow: Jessica Jones meets Eowyn.
