It was on this day in 1901 that Walt Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois.

You may have heard of him. He started what is now one of the world's largest entertainment companies in 1923 and is responsible for some of the largest technological breakthroughs in genre storytelling.

In addition to inventing the family amusement park (they existed before but not in such an enclosed safe-spacey kind of way), Disney pioneered new ways of animating stories that are still utilized to this day.

It was also on this day in 1980 that Flash Gordon premiered. Starring Sam Jones, Melody Anderson and Max von Sydow, the movie is a cult hit.

And also? The soundtrack is by Queen.

Other birthdays today? Nick Stahl was born on this day in 1979 ... and then went on to star in Carnivale.

Tomorrow: An entirely too large series of photos of Samantha Stevens' mother.
