It's been five years since the release of Hellboy: The Golden Army. Fans of the hero are itching for Guillermo del Toro to make another sequel. Unfortunately, that's easier said than done. So what's keeping the brakes on the trilogy?
While promoting his latest film, Mama, del Toro gave Latino Review a status update on Hellboy 3. "Well, a couple of weeks ago or months ago, I did make a couple of phone calls to test, to gauge the possibility of doing that, because it's a big movie," del Toro revealed. "There's no takers for a movie of that size."
He explained that the previous films were moderately successful, but the third might be pushing it. "The two movies made their money back and a little bit. They were financially good, but one was 50 and the other one was 80, 85," he said. "This is 140. So no one wants to do that leap, from the financial side."
The director explains, "Unless we find a way to do the mother of all Kickstarters," a sequel's unlikely.
