It might seem impossible, but apparently Peter Jackson still has some footage left on the cutting-room floor from his middle Hobbit film.
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has confirmed The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition will be released on Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray on Nov. 4. Whatâll it feature? More than 25 minutes of footage that was not in the theatrical cut. Considering how much stuff Jackson has added and jammed into these films up to this point, weâre curious to see what actually didnât make the cut.
We enjoy Jacksonâs Hobbit films as much as anyone, but between all the good stuff, there is a fair bit of bloat that could be trimmed. For those keeping score, the extended cut of An Unexpected Journey clocked in with an additional 13 minutes, with Smaug almost doubling that total. At this rate, will Battle of the Five Armies feature an extra hour?
In anticipation of the release, the studio has released a clip featuring Bilbo (Martin Freeman) as heâs sent to cross the enchanted waters of Mirkwood Forest, using the unstable vines above the stream. Itâs not a bad scene by any means, but it still feels unnecessary. But if you canât get enough Middle-earth, enjoy:
