BBC’s adaptation of Phillip Pullman’s beloved series, His Dark Materials, has been renewed for a second season before the first has even debuted. Deadline reports that the Bad Wolf and New Line production has been picked up for an additional eight episodes. It is unknown if the second season will serve as a continuation of the series’ first book, Northern Lights, or adapt the second work in the trilogy, The Subtle Knife.

Filming for Season 1 just began this month, with Les Miserables’ Tom Hooper directing. The series, which stars James McAvoy, Dafne Keen, Ruth Wilson, and Lin-Manuel Miranda is reportedly one of the most expensive British scripted series ever produced. This is likely good news for those hoping for a faithful adaptation of Pullman’s books following the disappointment of 2007’s The Golden Compass movie.

BBC has yet to announce a release date for His Dark Materials.

Avengers: Infinity War directors, the Russo Brothers are teaming with comic book writer and novelist Benjamin Percy to adapt his trilogy, The Comet Cycle, as a film series. The three books in Percy’s series —The Ninth Metal, The Unfamiliar Garden, and Sky Fault — center around the aftermath of a meteor shower with severe ramifications. Percy is best known for his run on Green Arrow: Rebirth and is currently the writer on Nightwing.

Houghton Mifflin will begin publishing the books in the U.S. in early 2020 according to a release shared on Percy’s Twitter account. The Comet Cycle is the latest in a collection of genre works that the Russos have optioned for film and television, including Deadly Class and The Warriors.

Lastly, A24’s horror-comedy, Slice, which had a one night only theatrical release in select theaters last night, is skipping the standard release route and hitting VOD today. In fact, the film is already available to watch, having hit video-on-demand services at midnight.

Written and directed by Austin Vesely, and starring Chance the Rapper and Deadpool 2 breakout, Zazie Beetz, Slice follows pizza delivery drivers living in a town where supernatural happenings are a common occurrence. When brutal murders begin, the employees of the pizzeria band together to stop whatever is going bump in the night.
