Did Marvel just tease the return of Peggy Carter to the MCU?

Hayley Atwell dropped by Marvel Studios recently, prompting a flurry of speculation that Peggy Carter may be returning to the MCU.

A fan favorite, Atwell played the role of Peggy “I know my value” Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger, the Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Ant-Man, as well as guest-starring on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. She also toplined her own Agent Carter TV series, canceled by ABC last year on a heck of a cliffhanger.

Atwell met with Marvel Studios Co-President Louis D’Esposito, who promptly took to social media to release pictures of himself and the Howard’s End actress: one where it looks like they are standing in his office, and a second where they are pictured in front of that awesome Howling Commandos mural with the caption: “Standing in front of one of my favorite murals with one of my favorite people, Hayley Atwell.”

Now, it could be that Hayley Atwell was just visiting an old friend and we're making much ado about nothing, but it could also herald the return of Agent Carter to the MCU, even though the character died in Captain America: Civil War.

See, Marvel likes to do flashbacks, and this is how they brought Atwell back for a surprise cameo appearance in Ant-Man — meaning it’s not so far-fetched to believe she could pop up in Ant-Man and the Wasp (which has begun filming) as the movie explores how Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) vanished into the Quantum Real.

Then there’s also the fact that the upcoming Captain Marvel movie takes place in the 1990s, where Peggy is still alive and kicking. Wouldn’t it be great to see Agent Carter fight the good fight alongside Brie Larson's Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in the Kree-Skrull war?
