Did Sebastian Stan just give away three Avengers surprise appearances?

We already know that Avengers: Infinity War and presumably next year's yet-to-be-titled Avengers 4 are packed to the rafters with just about every character Marvel has introduced during the last decade. But now we've heard from one of the stars of the movies about three more actors whose names have been missing from the roster — until this moment.

Possible spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War and/or Avengers 4 ahead.

The star in question is Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier in the MCU and who is revived from cryogenic sleep and ready to rumble with Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. While doing press for the movie in London, Stan spoke with the Independent (via Slashfilm) about appearing in what could be the biggest Marvel action sequence to date, and casually dropped some surprising info:

“There was one scene, I think, we had where everybody was there. I can’t really talk about that scene, but I knew it took them three months in planning this scene to have everyone there. You look around and you just saw everyone from Samuel L. Jackson to Michael Douglas to Michelle Pfeiffer. Everybody was there.”

Hold on a minute. None of that trio of actors have been previously confirmed to appear in Avengers: Infinity War, so Stan's revelation is eye-opening to say the least. Of the three, Samuel L. Jackson has been spotted on the set in Atlanta, but Marvel has still not officially said that Nick Fury appears in either Avengers movie (although he is in the 1990s-set Captain Marvel, which comes out before Avengers 4).

As for Michael Douglas, who plays Hank Pym, and Michelle Pfeiffer, that's a bit more intriguing: Michelle Pfeiffer’s character, Janet Van Dyne a.k.a. the original Wasp, is currently lost in the Quantum Realm, although with Pfeiffer showing up in Ant-Man and the Wasp, it's pretty much a given she'll be found again.

But since Ant-Man and the Wasp doesn't come out until July—- three months after Infinity War — how exactly does she appear in the latter movie?

The likeliest answer is that she doesn't, that the battle scene Stan was describing takes place in Avengers 4 — which comes out next year — and that Stan was getting his movies confused. We imagine that when you're shooting two massive Avengers movies almost back to back, it's easy to get your giant action sequences confused.

We already know from the trailers that Infinity War features a massive fight scene on the plains of Wakanda in which as many as 40 superheroes are involved. But now we can surmise that there might be an even bigger one coming in Avengers 4, featuring at least one hero we have yet to even meet. Or maybe that scene is in Infinity War, thanks to the mysteries of the Quantum Realm. Either way, we now know that Nick Fury, Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne will all apparently play a role somewhere in the next two Avengers films.

We'll find out part of the answer to that puzzle in just eight days, when Avengers: Infinity War opens on April 27.
