It seems like everyone is getting into genre programming these days, and WGN America seems to have a hit on its hands with the supernatural horror series Salem.
Just a couple episodes into season one, the network has announced the series will return next season with 13 more episodes. The period-set witch drama debuted with 3.4 million total viewers, and 1.5 million in the 19-49 demographic, across a full seven-day period counting DVR numbers.
Matt Cherniss, president and general manager at WGN America, said the series was basically a pilot to try to generate some buzz and prove the network could be a viable home for original programming. Pulling in those numbers, they think it’s succeeded:
“At WGN America, we are committed to delivering compelling, brand-defining programming rich with fascinating characters and ‘Salem’ has done just that. Brannon Braga, Adam Simon, the talented cast and our great partners at Fox 21 have opened up an intriguing world that has captivated viewers.”
For a first effort, Salem is a surprisingly solid drama. It’s produced by genre heavy Brannon Braga (Star Trek, Terra Nova) and stars fan favorite sci-fi alums such as Seth Gabel (Fringe), Shane West (Nikita) and Xander Berkeley (Being Human).
The second season will debut in 2015, and production is expected to ramp up in the next few months.
