Ahead of the first issue coming out in early April, Titan Comics has released a four page lettered preview from Penny Dreadful: The Awaking #1.
The comic book series takes place six months after the show's highly controversial finale and sees our American Werewolf in London, Ethan Chandler (played by Josh Hartnett in the John Logan-created series), unable to move on following the death of Vanessa (Eva Green). "As he searches desperately for meaning in a world without Vanessa, ancient words echo across the centuries, and he is called on once again to take up arms against the creatures crawling out of the night."
Also returning for the new storyline are Sir Malcolm Murray (who was portrayed by Timothy Dalton), Lily (Billie Piper) and -- my personal favorite -- Ferdinand Lyle (Simon Russell Beale),
archaeologist Egyptologist. Who may very well be on the cusp of discovering, oh, a mummy going by the name of Imhotep, perhaps? Hmm? That's what one of the preview pages seemingly hints at, and there had been rumors that had the show returned for a fourth season, Logan would have tackled The Mummy.
Penny Dreadful: The Awaking is penned by the TV series' co-executive producer, Chris King, with interior art from Jesús Hervás (Sons of Anarchy). The first issue will feature four variant covers from artists Stephen Mooney (Half Past Danger), Rob Davis (The Motherless Oven), Shane Pierce (Judge Dredd, Vikings) and Louie De Martinis (Penny Dreadful prequel mini-series), as well as two photo variant covers (six in all).
Check out the pages below, a couple of which were seen in slightly altered form in our Penny Dreadful preview from last week. Penny Dreadful: The Awaking #1 will hit comic book stores and digital platforms on April 5.
