The annual Academy Awards ceremony may not air until next year, but campaigning for nominations has already begun. Disney launched its campaign for Black Panther to be considered in 16 Oscar categories months ago, and now they’re expanding the categories they want Avengers: Infinity War considered for as well.
According to IGN, Disney at first just listed Infinity War for Best Visual Effects. Recently, though, they added 10 more categories they would like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to consider the film for. The new categories are Best Director, Best Production Design, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. Marvel may rightly be focusing on Black Panther for more awards, but they’ve apparently decided to try a little bit more for Infinity War as well. A few of these added categories overlap with ones they want Black Panther nominated for too.
In addition to these Marvel films, Disney has three other movies listed on its “For Your Consideration” website. The company would like Incredibles 2 considered for 11 categories, Mary Poppins Returns considered for 17 categories, and Ralph Breaks the Internet considered for 12 catergories.
Award nominations will be announced in January, and the 91st Academy Awards will air February 24, 2019.
