Donald Glover stars as the grown Lion prince, Simba, who, as a young cub (played by JD McCrary), must run away from home after the tragic death of his father, King Mufasa (James Earl Jones returns to the role, obviously) at the hands of his uncle, Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor). While away, Simba is raised by a carefree, insect-loving warthog (Pumbaa, Seth Rogen) and meerkat (Timon, Billy Eichner).
Recreating the iconic opening from the 1994 animated original—including the "Circle of Life" sung by Carmen Twillie and Lebo M—the trailer is narrated by Mufasa, who states that Simba will become king once he's gone. Having directed the 2016 reimagining of The Jungle Book, Favreau seems well at home with the groundbreaking motion capture techology that served him so well last time.
