Disney dropped this image of actress Yifei Liu (The Forbidden Kingdom), in costume as the iconic Chinese heroine, Monday morning to celebrate the start of production on the process. As you can see, she looks more than ready for battle.
Director Niki Caro (Whale Rider) is helming the film, which is the latest in a long line of live-action reworkings of Disney animated classics that have already included The Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland, and Beauty and the Beast. Though it retains the story of a young Chinese woman disguising herself as a man in order to save her father and honor her family, this version of Mulan will make several key changes to the story, including the addition of new villains.
Caro also took to Instagram to post an image from the first day of shooting.
We don't know too many plot details yet, but the film's impressive cast of Asian stars, as well as the production value Disney tends to throw into these projects, has many fans excited for what Mulan has in store. Though all of the live-action adaptations in this particular line of Disney films gives the studio an opportunity to play with familiar motifs in new ways, this story of a warrior princess feels like it has the potential to be something particularly special.
In addition to Liu, Mulan also stars Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Gong Li as a still-unnamed villain, Jet Li as The Emperor, and Jason Scott Lee as Bori Khan. It's set to hits theaters March 27, 2020.
