Disney takes aim at Netflix with ‘substantially' lower price point for new streaming service

Will your Star Wars TV binge save you more money than a Stranger Things marathon?

Disney certainly thinks so. With an ambitious plan to bring loads of new content to the small screen — including a newly announced live-action Star Wars TV series — the Mouse House is pushing hard into the TV streaming space. And it's looking to do that at a cheaper, more appealing price point that takes square aim at Netflix.

On Disney's widely touted earnings call Thursday, The Wrap reports, CEO Bob Iger said, “Our plan on the Disney side is to price this substantially below where Netflix is.” He added, however, that this "is in part reflective of the fact it’ll have less volume,” while stressing that the service will debut with “a lot of high quality." 

The Mouse House seems to be hoping fans will buy into the idea that its service, though far lighter on content, will be all killer and no filler. That value-for-dollar proposition comes in the wake of an across-the-board price increase at Netflix, which announced its bump just ahead of the debut of its own hot property, Stranger Things Season 2.

Fantasy and sci-fi are having more than a moment in the competitive world of subscription-based programming, that’s for sure. Disney’s unveiling of new Star Wars, Marvel, and in-house content for its forthcoming service is just the latest in a recent flurry of news pointing to a near future when the options for geeking out in front of the TV could be embarrassingly rich.

Whether they’re good — well, getting to decide for yourself is all part of the fun.

News also hit this week that Disney’s rollout will include an all-new Marvel show, setting the internet on fire with speculation over the possibilities. Details are super-light, but a creative universe with possibilities that run the gamut from Spider-Man to The Avengers to Guardians of the Galaxy to Thor… well, you get the idea.

One thing’s for sure: We’re gonna be seeing a lot of fresh takes on things we already love. A slew of upcoming Star Wars movies and an original, live-action Star Wars TV show appear to be just the beginning.

We don’t yet know how much Disney’s planning to charge; all we know for now is that we'll be getting curated content at a price that undercuts Netflix. How much would you be willing to pay for exclusive, all-original Star Wars and Marvel content — plus whatever else Disney might have up its sleeve?
