Disney’s iconic anthropomorphic Volkswagen Beetle is getting a TV reboot!

A new report over at TVLine reveals Disney XD is looking to reboot The Love Bug as a new Herbie series. Seems that Travis Braun (Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders) has been tapped to pen the potential series, with him serving as executive producer alongside Tom Burkhard and Matt Dearborn (Zeke and Luther, Even Stevens).

The project is looking for either a boy or a girl to play the lead character, who will be named Landon or Lili Reed, depending on who gets cast. The character, described as “part scientist, part entrepreneur, part daredevil,” realizes that his/her parents have “secretly been working on a government project: a talking car named Herbie. Herbie is key to helping the kid reunite with her/his parents, but a gang of criminals also wants to get its paws on the state-of-the-art vehicle.”

The iconic character Herbie the Love Bug first appeared on the big screen in Disney’s 1968 The Love Bug, starring Dean Jones and Michele Lee, followed by several sequels. The last time the beloved Beetle revved up its engine in movie theaters was in the 2005 Lindsay Lohan movie Herbie: Fully Loaded.

This won't be the first time Herbie will appear on television. There was a 1982 TV series that lasted for one season titled Herbie, The Love Bug, which saw the return of Dean Jones as Jim Douglas, as well as a 1997 TV movie directed by Peyton Reed in his pre-Ant-Man days and starring Ash vs. Evil Dead’s Bruce Campbell!

What do you think of a potential Herbie reboot on Disney XD?
