It’s a wonder that it took so long for fans to get an Artemis Fowl film, seeing as the young adult fantasy book was one of the more popular of its kind and chock-full of exciting imagery, imaginative characters, and awe-inspiring world-building. Plus, a heist! But after some production struggles and the nailing down of both cast and crew, the first in Disney’s adaptation series has released its first teaser bringing audiences into the land of crime and fairies.
Author Eoin Colfer introduced us to the world of rich boy Artemis Fowl and his huge, deadly Butler — played here by Ferdia Shaw and Nonso Anozie, respectively — who are after the riches of the magical underworld. And we mean “under.” Fairykind lives underground in a spectacular series of caves, stalactites, and technological creations that blend organic material with steampunk gears. And director Kenneth Branagh has brought it to life.

The film introduces Lara McDonnell, Tamara Smart, Josh Gad, and Judi Dench to the world, while the trailer only warns Fowl of the dangers lurking underground and the magic he is woefully unprepared for. Especially if he’s got theft in mind.
Artemis Fowl begins stealing hearts, minds, and everything that’s not nailed down on Aug. 9, 2019.
