As she prepares to tackle her own young adult genre franchise with Divergent, Shailene Woodley is taking aim at one of the biggest hits on the planet.
While talking to Teen Vogue and promoting Divergent, Woodley got off talking about Twilight and noted she most definitely doesn’t want to be the next Kristen Stewart. Despite the fact that it positively destroyed the box office, Woodley said she finds Twilight despicable for the message it sends to young women.
Here’s the choice excerpt:
"Twilight, I'm sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship. She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she's going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve."
Ouch. But, yeah, it’s hard to really argue. Most genre fans would agree that Twilight had its fair share of problems. Kudos to Woodley for taking a stand on it, and this should definitely endear her to a fair share of fans.
Do you agree with Woodley’s take on the franchise?
