After the huge success of R-rated comedy Ted, Seth MacFarlane is prepping another comedy project, A Million Ways to Die in the West — and it apparently includes one heck of a nice sci-fi easter egg.
A new trailer for the Wild West-set comedy, which is only playing in theaters at the moment, features a surprise cameo from Back to the Future’s Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd), as well as his iconic DeLorean time machine in the closing bit of footage. As fans surely know, the third Back to the Future film is set in the Wild West era, so the timing lines up perfectly (though the train-engine time machine is noticeably absent). Who knew it was all the same universe?!
The scene finds MacFarlane’s character wandering up to a building that looks extremely similar to Doc Brown’s building used in in Back to the Future 3. Then bright blue lights start flashing and shining through the windows. MacFarlane’s character opens the door to find Doc Brown, sporting his cowboy gear, standing beside the DeLorean half-covered with a tarp.
Of course, this being Doc Brown, he has the perfect excuse: “It’s nothing, just a weather experiment.” It’s a great scene, and you don’t have to look much further than Family Guy to know that MacFarlane is a pop-culture nut, so it makes sense he’d drop as many cool nods as possible. Here's hoping this trailer arrives online soon, at least before the film opens on May 30.
So, Back to the Future fans, it looks like we can add one more film to the canon. Now all we need is Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly to ride in and save the day …
