In the age of social media, sometimes it seems like the most we can expect from movie and TV stars is simply good behavior. Not everyone can live up to the characters they portray. But Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch bucked that trend by racing to the defence of a deliveryman in London.
Via The Sun, Uber driver Manuel Dias shared the story of Cumberbatch’s recent heroics. According to Dias, Cumberbatch was traveling in his car alongside his wife, Sophie Hunter, when they spotted a Deliveroo cyclist being viciously attacked by four muggers. Cumberbatch quickly exited the vehicle and confronted the attackers, before pulling them off of their victim.
“I had hold of one lad and Benedict another,” said Dias. “He seemed to know exactly what he was doing. He was very brave. He did most of it, to be honest...They tried to hit him but he defended himself and pushed them away. He wasn’t injured. Then I think they also recognised it was Benedict and ran away.”
“Benedict was courageous, brave and selfless,” added Dias. “If he hadn’t stepped in the cyclist could have been seriously injured. He asked the rider how he was and when he said, ‘I’m OK’ Benedict just hugged him.”
Dias also noted that the attack took place just a short distance away from 221B Baker Street, the address of Cumberbatch’s other iconic character: Sherlock Holmes.
When reached by The Sun, Cumberbatch simply said “I did it out of, well, I had to, you know...”
"We’d like to thank Benedict Cumberbatch for his heroic actions,” said a spokesperson for Deliveroo. “On behalf of everyone at Deliveroo: thank you so much."
