We're still patiently waiting for Doctor Who's return later this year, and now we know at least one classic villain that will also be back for Peter Capaldi's final season.

Writer Mark Gatiss confirmed via Twitter that the Ice Warriors will be back in action later this year. Gatiss teased that the episode will be an adventure featuring "the kind of Jules Verne, Edgar Rice Burroughs story of derring-do, which I've always loved. But it has a new twist. There is a new Ice Warrior in it, a new kind of Ice Warrior."

The Ice Warriors, a race of reptilian humanoid creatures, date all the way back to their first appearance in 1967 on the classic series. Gatiss previously revived them in the 2013 episode "Cold War," which starred 11th Doctor Matt Smith. It's now been four years since fans have gotten a look at these creatures — and it sounds like Gatiss plans to shake up the formula this time around.

As Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat wrap up their run, it's encouraging to see them taking the franchise full circle with some vintage baddies.

The new season of Doctor Who is set to premiere in April on BBC America.
